Tremors

Posted by bernicky - June 29th, 2011

My wife has been having minor seizures this time on the left side which is a first and not a good sign. She is also experiencing headaches which have not been easy to treat with ibuprofen or acetaminophen we are going to see if a combination will work. There has also been a problem with a pressure sore but we have become pretty proficient at dealing with those over the last six months this one was just oddly located and progressed much farther than we would have liked before being noticed. There are definite disadvantages to paralysis.

On a more disturbing note my wife has been showing symptoms of dementia quite apart from those of expressive aphasia and apraxia. Short term memory is definitely being affected as she has difficulty remembering things. It is not unusual at the moment for my wife to forget having taken her medicine or having gone to the bathroom only minutes after doing both. We are seeing the oncologist next week but I think it might be time to see the neurologist again.

My new job starts next week which will be an adventure of its own no doubt. It is something to which I look forward with some guarded optimism. I am still not running as my right leg continues to give me problems even when standing. This week I have managed to get out on the bike twice and have plans to try and get out regularly to try and preserve some level of fitness going into the fall running season. Eventually I will be back on the hoof and I don’t want to have to start back from scratch.

Provincial track and field photos

Posted by bernicky - June 28th, 2011

Our daughter went into the weekend track and field competition ranked dead last in the province. She threw a personal best and finished third to last which may sound like a weird thing to brag about but it is in my mind a significant achievement.

Upcoming

Posted by bernicky - June 20th, 2011

Things have been a little up in the air with us – end of the school year and all that. We are getting by though and we are looking forward to seeing our son graduate high school. Our daughter is going to the provincial track championships (like going to state championships in the US) throwing discus and javelin. She won’t compete in javelin despite qualifying as she has a rotator cuff injury but she will throw discus. If we can find the time this week we are going to try and get to Boutique Endurance on St. Denis and get her a pair of throwing shoes for the meet.

My wife is doing OK but is frustrated by her lack of ability to speak and the lack of mobility. With any luck her speech will start to return in another month but there is no telling if that will happen. We are slowly lowering my wife’s decadron dosage from 32mg per day to currently 16mg and will continue to scale back until we get to 8mg before reassessing the rate of withdrawal.

For my own part my runs and even walking have entered the level of the intolerable. This morning’s 13K run was barely doable even at the pedestrian 5:30 pace. Walking and standing is painful enough that my previous decision to try and run through this injury has fallen by the wayside. My current plan is to take a few weeks off and reassess things at that time. In the meantime I will try and stay in shape on the bike and maybe get back in the pool. There are two races I want to do in August so the challenge will be to stay in shape and be able to come back onto the circuit pain free.

Days go by

Posted by bernicky - June 18th, 2011

Days like today can be a little frustrating for me as they are probably always frustrating for my wife. My son went out to work for 94.7 Hits doing a remote from a softball marathon in Roxboro today. The intern position is an interesting gig no doubt but I wonder if the people he is working for went through the same thing. Long hours, no pay is a difficult job. My son looks for work but has had no success since his first job last year as a door knocker for Weedman. Curiously as hard as cold call door to door work is he enjoyed doing it and made some good pocket money while working. I often think of my son as lazy but the fact of the matter is that he graduated in the top 10 in his high school class, got into the program he wanted to in CEGEP and works like a dog when he is assigned work to do whether he is being paid or not. Not really lazy, just really relaxed when he doesn’t have anything specific to do: in other words a teenager.

After my son went out I managed to waddle off for a 21K run which was very hot and tiring. My right leg has not recovered from the injury inflicted by the shoes worn in the marathon though everything I have read about the injury indicates that other than ice and stretching nothing else is required for my eventual recovery. As soon as I arrived home from the run my mother in law left for the day followed shortly after by our daughter. This left me in the position of having a law which needs mowing, a garden which needs tending, groceries which need doing and having to stay inside all day. My wife has been tired and sleeping most of the day but we did manage to fit in a viewing of Funny Girl a movie that I highly recommend.

Right now I am watching Hereafter a movie that is long on mood and as short on script as Matt Damon is in emotion in this movie. It isn’t an unwatchable movie but it is slow.

A success

Posted by bernicky - June 14th, 2011

The surprise party was a success. My wife did not expect a thing and there was tons of food and lots of friends. It is difficult to imagine how it could have gone better.

I would like to thank Terry and Dee and my kids for the set up and the dozen or so people who stayed after the party to clean up. We were out of the venue and back home in time to catch the Tony Awards. Well my wife and kids watched the Tonys I faded off to sleep on the couch.

More info about the party

Posted by bernicky - June 6th, 2011

Where: Surrey Aquatic and Community Centre 1945 Parkfield Avenue H9P 1T8. (514) 633-4001
There is a pool at the center but it costs for non residents. There is also a very nice park at the center and a basketball court and some tennis courts and a skateboard park. Plenty for the kids to do if you bring them.

When: Sunday June 12 – Set up will be from 14:00 to 16:00 – Terry D and Deirdre F are handling decorations if you want to help please let me know and I will pass along your email to them.

What: This is a pot luck birthday party for my wife’s 50th birthday.

Who: Anyone (plus spouse and children) who is friends with my wife. Other than our own children relatives are not invited.

Party start: When my wife arrives. We will be trying for a 16:15 or so arrival. I have told my wife that it is a volunteer awards pot luck supper and I will be receiving an award.

Party end: We have the room until 22:00 but I would like to end the party earlier (21:00)so we have time to clean up the decorations.

Varia: I have ordered a liquor license but with the postal strike whether or not I get it on time might be up in the air. Grr. Will let you all know. For the time being plan to bring your own wine or beer if you want to drink anything. I will provide some soft drinks – Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Diet 7Up. If you have any music you would like to hear bring it along I will be bringing a pretty good boom box for music.

Committed: At the moment we have 39 guests for a room with a capacity of 70 so there will be plenty of room and with any luck it won’t get too hot. At the moment we only have 4 dishes promised I am hoping that, that number will change this week.
